Modern filter pumps now have coarse mesh inlets, around 6-8mm, to allow larger particles of fish waste and plant material to be macerated and sent to the biological filter. These pumps must be left running 24 hours per day therefore choosing a pump with a lower electrical consumption (wattage) and a long guarantee is wise. Cheaper sump style pumps may at first glance look attractive but may in the long run cost much more to run and have a limited life.
Filter pumps can be used to supply a waterfall, but are not suitable for running fountains as the large particles being pumped will quickly block any fountain jet holes
